Spatial Sound Institute (SSI)

In 2015, 4DSOUND founded the Spatial Sound Institute (SSI) in Budapest, a permanent non-profit facility dedicated to spatial sound as an emerging field of study with increasing influence on a range of scientific, socio-cultural and artistic areas.

Over the years, spatial sound is steadily gaining recognition as a new medium that opens up ways of expression and communication with sound that were not possible before, allowing listeners to further their understanding of space and to develop more subtle, complex and intensive levels of awareness within their surroundings.

Located in the city’s Art Quarter, SSI offers an on-going artist residency programme, large-scale 4DSOUND studio, open-access library, a learning curriculum consisting of workshops, masterclasses and lectures, and hosts regular public events.

ICEE Success

ICEE works with Texas, national, and international partners to develop, implement, and research the integration of the arts and innovation thinking with required learning in science, math, and language arts in K-12 schools and out-of-school settings.

Nationally-recognized researchers, educators, businesses, governments, universities, and school systems point out that, in order to be successful in the 21st century, our nation and students must develop vital 21st century thinking skills. These include: conceptual thinking, creative and critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creative problem solving.

Objectives:

  1. Meet the national and international mandates to train students and teachers in the vital 21st century skills that lead to innovation.
  2. Accomplish this through integrating state-mandated curriculum with these important skills.
  3. Increase student and teacher curriculum engagement and learning through integrating state-mandated learning with creative thinking.
  4. Promote lifelong interest and engagement in STEM, the arts, and creative thinking.

Philip Beesley Studio Inc.

Philip Beesley Studio Inc. is an interdisciplinary design company located in Toronto, Canada. PBAI specializes in architectural design of public buildings, public art and experimental installations. The group is closely associated with the multi-partner Living Architecture Systems Group, the School of Architecture and Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, the architectural practice of Pucher Seifert, and Riverside Architectural Press. Sculptural work in the past two decades has focused on immersive textile environments, landscape installations and intricate geometric structures. The most recent generations of these works feature interactive sound, light and kinetic mechanisms with distributed control systems. Studio research focuses on aesthetics, technology and craft of responsive envelope systems including digital fabrication of extremely light-weight, flexible component arrays containing embedded sensors and actuators.

Projects are developed at widely varying scales from urban design to personal couture, using cycles of multidisciplinary experimentation and implementation. The studio’s design methods combine the durable crafts of heavy machining and building with advanced digital visualization, industrial design, digital prototyping, electronics and mechanical engineering.

4DSOUND Technologies

4DSOUND is an Amsterdam-based development studio exploring spatial sound as a medium. Since 2007, the studio has participated in more than 150 international projects and developed integrated hardware and software systems that provide a fully omnidirectional sound environment.

These environments enable vivid sonic experiences that blur the boundaries between the real and the imagined: the world of sound we know, and a world beyond. Building upon more than a decade of research, development and experimentation, 4DSOUND has been at the forefront of some of the most creatively challenging and technically complex projects ranging from symphonic experiences to bio-wearable instruments, from interactive theatre to kinetic architecture, which truly reflects the interdisciplinary scope of studio’s activities.
